VideoCrap #1 - Journey's "After the Fall"

Metal Mania

Welcome to the first ever edition of VideoCrap! This is the column where I pick apart campy, cheesy, and sometimes outright horrible music videos from any era and any genre. This doesn't mean the song is horrible, just the video! Now, I know only zero of you are going to point this out, so I am going to admit it right here, this column is inspired by WrestleCrap. I am not "copying" off RD Reynolds. This is just something I've always wanted to do and have fun with. I highly advise that if you are a wrestling fan of any kind, check out WrestleCrap!

Now, let us see if I can get the job done or not! Of course, with this being WYLFWT.com, we have to start with this band, and our website's good luck charm...

It is no big secret that I am a fan the corporate rock band, Journey. They are a guilty pleasure of mine.

However, I am going to be the first admit, they had some god awful music videos. Especially the ones off of their 1983 album, Frontiers. They released every song off of "Side A" as a single and a music video. Out of all of them, only one was half-way decent. (Faithfully). One was just a concert footage video (Send Her My Love). The other three were the laughable "Separate Ways," he really strange "Chain Reaction/." (Which is my favorite Journey song, by the way), and the other crazy one is... "After the Fall." I plan on eventually covering all three of those videos in VideoCrap.

"After the Fall" is your typical Journey power ballad. Since it is a bit more upbeat than "Open Arms" or "Faithfully," it makes for a fun sing-a-long experience when the band decides to play it live. It is not my favorite song, but I don't hate it by any means.

The music video, however, is a different story...

The video brings us to a small room. The things in the room keep on changing. Not sure why or what any of it means.

We even get Steve Perry on a leopard print couch, who looks like he just lost his best friend.

Behind him is Journey guitarist and rock legend, Neal Schon, literally having his own personal blue light special
Then we cut to this table, which becomes a big part of the "storyline" later in the video. Right now, we just have Perry enjoying a nice cup of java.
Next, Steve Perry giving us his best "It is hopeless. Utterly utterly hopeless!"

Either that, or he is just hopelessly in love. Well, someone should tell him that The Party is Over.

Finally, after some jacking around, we then get to the big chorus where it stars off with the line is "Can't stop falling." What happens?

THEY ARE FALLING!

Wow, very subtle...

Now, we go to Steve Perry doing his only patent acting skill. The Steve Perry Over-Emote. This is, of course, demonstrated by the shot to the left.
This shot as well.

William Shatner would be proud.

We cut back to the random kitchen table where we go back to the chorus of "Can't Stop Falling." At this point, one by one, the band gets up and yells at Steve Perry. Hey, that'll show him for his random freak out a few years later!

At which, Steve Perry reaches his boiling point and gives us the best "What the fuck, mate?" expression ever.

After some more falling, blue light special, and The Steve Perry Over-Emote...

We cut Steve Perry busting a move. Way to boogie!

So thus ends this music video.  Sadly, after the epic Frontiers album was released, Steve Perry fired two of the band members and then they released the very subpar effort in Raised on Radio. Then, Steve Perry's mom passed away, his relationship with Sherry from "Oh Sherry" end, and Perry grew increasingly anti-social just to make sure his voice was in top shape for the tour... he eventually just decided to end the Journey during the Raised on Radio tour, and went in to seclusion for basically the rest of his life, albeit one more solo album and one more Journey album.

As for the After the Fall music video... I'm sorry. I got nothing.
